Chicago police announced Thursday that the 23-year-old man who was accused of beating his 25-year-old girlfriend earlier this month has been charged with aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery and homicide of an unborn child.
The beating -- which occurred near the 4800 block of South Laflin about 11 p.m. on July 8 -- resulted in the loss of the victim's baby. She was seven and a half months pregnant at the time of the attack. The baby was delivered stillborn the following day. Doctors determined the beating to be the cause of the unborn baby's death.
The woman told police a group of men and women approched her while she was walking, exchanging words, and then began beating her in her arms and stomach. She identified her boyfriend, Jovanny Martinez, as one of her assailants. Police believe the attack was gang related.
